1d6 Magical Bows

Hello again, have some magical bows. Kinda have some more brainpower for random RPG stuff now that I’m not using all of my energy on coding a game or hotfixing my campaign rules, haha. This whole thing was basically spawned from an idea for item number 5, which some may know what it is inspired by. Number 1 is an item quite happily used by an ever-growing giant fighter in my current campaign as well.

Didn’t set any plus-something on these, so just toss a +X that feels appropriate on them if you use that kind of thing.

(1) Giantswood Bow

A bow made from a single knotted root of Giantswood, strung with twined bark from the very same tree. Despite being roughly hewn, the root is still alive.

  • The bow will grow to match the user’s size.
  • The bow is unaffected by normal weather, including heat, cold, dampness, and dryness.

(2) Sylph’s Bow

A slender blue-tinged bow, seemingly made from glass, and strung only with a faintly visible stream of compressed air.

  • The bow may be shot without an arrow, launching billowing projectile made from wind (half range and -1 damage compared to a normal arrow).
  • The bow’s power can be consumed to launch an arrow carried by winds, doubling range and damage. This leaves the bow unusable for the day, as the “string” dissipates.

(3) Mechanical Golem Bow

A sturdy bronze bow, strung with steel wire. The bow limb is segmented, consisting of two humanoid-arm-like parts on each side and a grip, all connected with articulated joints. When drawn, a mechanical ticking and creaking can be heard.

  • When drawn, the bow will remain drawn until a command word is spoken by the owner.
  • When the command word is spoken, the bow will shoot, even if not held by the owner – or not held at all.

(4) Assassin’s Bow

A stylish black cane, simple, tasteful and elegant, made from dull dark wood. Clearly not a weapon… except it is. When transformed, it becomes a small black shortbow in one slender piece, with a half-transparent spidersilk string.

  • The bow makes almost no noise when shot, emitting only a soft whoosh.
  • The bow can be transformed between its two states by carefully bending it over the course of a minute or so.
  • An arrow can be fit inside the bow while in cane form, but must be removed before transforming it.

(5) Bow of Duality of the One

A carved bone bow, worn enough to almost feel like soft skin, with two contrasting horns meeting at the middle – a white horn depicting a a gentle lamb, and a black horn showing a ravenous wolf. The carvings are both of simple make and yet oddly realistic, and are based on an old tale of the inevitability of death – peaceful or violent, in comes all the same.

  • The bow deals an additional +1d4 damage against those who have unnaturally prolonged their life – undead included.
  • Once per day, the user can draw the bow without an arrow to launch a ghostly flame at a target, white-gold and as thick as oil, which will unerringly hit. The bow’s next hit against the target will cause a ghastly black shadow to leap forth and ravage the target, dealing one or more of the target’s own HD (including CON modifiers, if relevant) as damage, depending on the target’s current HP: if at 1/3 HP or less, 3 HD, if at 2/3 HP or less, 2 HD, otherwise 1 HD.

(6) Firebrand Bow

A bow made from woven orange-red thorny vines, with an uncomfortable grip. The bowstring is a piece of slow match, endlessly burning along its entire length.

  • All arrows shot from the bow are set on fire, adding +1d4 fire damage (but obviously destroying the arrows themselves).
  • The bow glows faintly in the dark.
  • The wielder has a +4 bonus to saves against effects that are calming or restraining in nature, but a -2 penalty to saves that incite passion or rage.
  • The wielder can shoot a crowd with a metaphysical arrow to incite chaos and rebellion.
  • If the wielder ever takes an action that promotes direct peace, restraint, and order, they can never use the bow again.
